Why on EARTH would Tesla sell a $250 Tequila?!
An empty bottle of the limited edition tequila is going up for sale for $2000 in EBAY!!!!!
If you’re unfamiliar with Tesla, they basically manufacture cars that are environmentally friendly. They have taken the automotive market by storm, becoming one of the most valuable automotive company in existence.
The company as a whole is worth over $500 Billion. 500,000,000,000!!!!
So, why on EARTH is a company worth over $500B start selling LIQUOR?!

There are a couple thoughts I’ve had about this topic for a while, and I wanted to share my ideas on why I believe it’s a really smart move by the company to sell something different than cars.
Before mentioning my thoughts on the tequila, I must say that business as a whole has changed because of the internet. This plays a major factor on what Tesla is and what it represents as a whole.
Business now has very few barriers or limitations, and any company can basically become a media corporation simply by releasing content on whatever it is they specialize in.
1. Tesla is NOW more than a car manufacturer
Tesla stands for innovation in the automotive industry, and they have revolutionized the world by releasing products that are both stylish and practical in a lot of ways.
Their CEO, Elon Musk, is known for being very vocal about topics that some would consider controversial. Despite the opinions, the personality of Musk, combined with the company’s recent success have created a valuable brand that actually stands for more than just vehicles.
It’s precisely that challenge of the status quo, what has allowed for the company to be criticized and praised by many, while at the same time creating a reputation that some love and others hate. Those precise thoughts toward the company are what make it so valuable.
The perception of the public towards the company has allowed for them to venture into other products. When entering a Tesla store you’ll see that they also sell clothing with the brand’s logo obviously. The combination of Musk’s personality and his personal ventures, along with the internet spectacle caused by Tesla, has created for an opportunity to sell other products like Tequila or clothing.
By the way, if Tesla had released a different product other than the Tequila it would have definitely sold out as well. The company now has audience attention, and that is extremely valuable in today's world. Personally I like to think this could have been a move to test out waters before releasing other products in the future.
The company is definitely a lot more than a manufacturer today, it has to do as much with society and the trendiness of their media as it does with the quality of their products.
2. Everyone drinks
Why tequila? Society has changed in many ways from the beginning of time, however, there are a couple of behaviors that remain constant in the world. We still drink water, eat, and like to enjoy time with others. That is where the tequila comes in.
Not everyone drinks alcohol but a lot of individuals do, and the fact that every month people spend their money having a couple drinks, made a perfect case for the company to distribute their “own” tequila.
According to a drug use and health survey in the U.S, it was found that almost 55% percent of participants had consumed alcohol at least once in the previous month. It’s a no-brainer, The company thought of a product that could appeal to a large demographic and simply tested out the idea.

The results of the test were successful, the product sold out very quickly. It comes to show that if businesses are smart about their brand identity, they could follow similar steps and distribute different products as well!
3. Major marketing move
Tesla spends $0 on advertisements.
Yes, $0.
The majority of the marketing they get comes from people discussing their opinions on the company or criticizing any decision Musk makes on his companies. Precisely because of that, the company has been able to become very popular among individuals who enjoy the ideals of the organization.
To me it was a major branding move to release the tequila because of the design of the bottle and because of the unexpected factor in releasing such product.
Think about it, a car manufacturer that has set the bar for environmentally friendly vehicles, and a controversial CEO release an amazing looking bottle as a limited edition? Genius.
Simply look at the design of the bottle, have you ever seen anything like it?

As far as I’m concerned the company could have released a water bottle and priced it at a similar price tag and it would have still sold out.
This just comes to show how everything matters when releasing a product. From packaging, to product quality, and even design; it all matters.
Who even cares about what the drink tastes like, the attention in social media it received made up for the whole promotion and distribution of the product.
Closing Thoughts
Any company today can have a similar approach to what Tesla did. If the fan-base or the audience of the brand feels identified or proud of what the organization stands for, they’ll be happy to spend on something that portrays those ideals.
The principles of business remain constant through time, the only factors that change are technology and how we perceive brands around us. Tesla simply is taking advantage of widespread platforms that happen to be the gatherers of attention today.
And attention is everything in a world of connectivity.
It would be interesting if other mainstream companies also begin to release different products than what they’re known for.
Business principles will always remain the same, and those who can take advantage of the tools today will be successful.
